Carole Fullerton is passionate about mathematics instruction.

Carole is a teacher-leader working in K-12 classrooms to support the development of numeracy instruction across BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and beyond. Addressing student diversity through rich questions, teaching through problem-solving and planning around the Big Math Ideas are essential aspects of her practice. In her collaborative work, she strives to engage students and their teachers in thought-full investigations of what it means to DO math, learning through exploration, talk and play.

Carole has presented extensively both nationally and internationally throughout her 25-year career, was a featured speaker at the NCTM conference in New Orleans and a keynote speaker at the NorthWest Math Conference in Whistler, BC. Her graduate research on spatial thinking was featured at the Psychology of Mathematics Conferences in Prague, Czech Republic and in Bergen, Norway. She has authored and co-authored more than eighteen teacher resources, all of which are grounded in a teaching-though-problem-solving approach, focused on mathematical thinking, on mastery of the facts, and on the operations. She was a Faculty Associate at Simon Fraser University where she taught in a Numeracy Graduate Diploma Program and enjoyed shepherding teachers on their pedagogical journey.

But her biggest accomplishment is her son Cameron — a confident, capable and flexible mathematician in his own right.

Jason Jones has been a High School Track coach in the Brandon School Division for 19 years as well as a Level 4 track official. Involved with track and field for over 30 years, he has competed nationally and was a provincial long-distance champion.

Mike Steeves has been a High School teacher in the Brandon School Division for 17 years. He has been involved in coaching various sports, including: football, basketball, rugby, track and field, and hockey. Mike has competed competitively as a CrossFit athlete, triathlete, long distance runner and university athlete.

This track and field coaching clinic will be focused towards middle years track and field events.

This session will be geared towards coaches and physical education teachers who coach and/or officiate at the middle years level. Specifying in the basic principles of event guidelines and regulations, specific event techniques and strategies, running technique and mechanics, the importance of dynamic warm ups and simple strength and fitness training tips.

5) PROMOTING FINE MOTOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT IN THE EARLY YEARS FULL

Sarah graduated with a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy from the University of Manitoba in 2004. She has been working in pediatrics with the Brandon Children’s Therapy Team since that time. Over the course of her career, she has worked with children from birth to age 21 and currently works with the school-aged population. Sarah is level 1 certified in “Handwriting without Tears” and has provided many educational sessions involving fine motor skill development.

Heather is a 2001 graduate of the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy. She began her career working in outpatient therapy and with the homecare program in Brandon, Manitoba. Heather started working with the pediatric population in 2005 and has provided consultative school-aged services through the Brandon Children’s Therapy Team since that time. She has shared her expertise and knowledge regarding fine motor skill development by providing many educational sessions over the years and supporting families and teachers with strategies that will allow the children to reach their fine motor skill goals.

In this session, participants will learn about the importance of foundational skills in promoting successful fine motor skill development in the early years. Participants will be introduced to individual and classroom-based tier one fine motor activities and strategies and will receive a brief overview of the “Learning Without Tears®” program. There will be a “make and take” of materials in the afternoon.

11) MINDFUL SCHOOLING AND WORKING WITH PARAPROFESSIONALS IN AN EARLY YEARS CLASSROOM FULL

Dr. Sheila Scott is a Professor at Brandon University where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education. Throughout her teaching career she has taught music to children in pre-kindergarten through grade twelve as well as both pre-service and in-service teachers. She especially enjoys working with early years students and is excited about sharing activities and resources she has used successfully with children with exceptional needs. Dr. Scott is author of the book Music education for children with autism spectrum disorder: A resource for teachers (Oxford, 2017)

Shannon Vogel, B.Ed., M. Spec. Ed. is a Grade One teacher in the Brandon School Division. Shannon has taught in multi-age classrooms and an Early Years Life Skills classroom. Shannon incorporates mindful practices, Universal Design for Learning, and Social Thinking strategies in her classroom and has witnessed a significant impact on her students social and emotional well-being. She strongly believes that establishing healthy and effective working relationships with paraprofessionals creates a strong, engaging, and mindful environment.

Mindful schooling and music-based activities in an early years classroom promotes the building blocks for positive interactions, self-regulation, and the creation of functional social emotional coping mechanisms. Through mindful meditation, deep breathing techniques, and sharing imagination through story-telling, students can learn to think about strategies that work best for them. She has worked in the sexuality and reproductive health field for over 14 years. Most of her career has been spent providing education with parents/caregivers, adult population and service providers.

Kaitlyn White is a Sexuality and Reproductive Health Facilitator at the Sexuality Education Resource Centre (SERC MB) in Brandon and has worked in the field of sexual health for over 8 years. Most of her experience has been in a classroom setting with youth. Kaitlyn has four kids and is particularly interested in making information about sexual health, consent, and relationships more accessible to children and youth.

This training is designed to help increase your comfort in facilitating sexual health education and discussions specific to consent and “sexting”. This session will include interactive discussions about “sexting” and the social, cultural, and emotional impacts for youth. With particular attention paid to concept of consent, and touching on the law, participants will review potential risks and benefits of sexting for youth. Participants will also have the opportunity to discuss how to address sexting in their school environment from a harm reduction approach.

13) ARCTIC SPORTS – USING TRADITIONAL PHYSICAL LITERACY IN THE CLASSROOM

Colin Hickman, a teacher in BSD, is a former athlete, coach, and official from Team Yukon. He attended the highest level of Arctic Sport competitions in 2014 – 2018: Arctic Winter Games, Native Youth Olympics, Yukon Championships, and World Eskimo-Indian Olympics. Colin also worked for the Yukon Aboriginal Sport Circle where he taught Arctic Sports in almost all the schools in the Yukon, he organized the Yukon Championships, and he ran professional development for Yukon educators.

You will learn how to teach and incorporate traditional Inuit sports (Arctic Sports) into your classroom. These sports come from Alaska, Greenland, the Northwest Territories, Nunavik (northern Quebec), Nunavut, Yamal (northern Russia), and the Yukon. Whether you are a classroom teacher or a physical educator, the skills and knowledge you will learn in this session can be immediately used and can be applied to many curricular outcomes. If you are a physical educator, these sports will challenge your physical education beliefs (one example – there is no such thing as a warm-up in Arctic Sports).

18) HUMAN TRAFFICKING: CANADA’S SECRET SHAME

The Joy Smith Foundation Inc.

Joy Smith, Founder & President of the Joy Smith Foundation, was a teacher for 23 years before she entered Parliament. She made Canadian history as the first sitting MP to amend the Criminal Code twice, both times to protect victims of human trafficking. Over the years she has helped countless young victims who have been exploited or trafficked by their abusers. After 11 years in Parliament, Joy Smith retired and now tirelessly volunteers full time for her foundation, fighting for the rights of women and girls in Canada. Founded in 2011, the Joy Smith Foundation is a registered charity which seeks to end human trafficking in Canada, by raising awareness through public education, and by providing funds to frontline organizations that rescue and rehabilitate victims of this heinous crime.

Human Trafficking happens every day in Canada. The average age of entry into the sex trade in Canada is 12-14 years, but no child makes this decision on their own. The Joy Smith Foundation’s educational programming equips students, parents and educators to recognize and report the signs of grooming and luring by traffickers. We provide training and educational materials to educators, parents and volunteers to help them raise awareness of human trafficking in their communities and classrooms. You don’t have to be a programmer to get your students to write computer programs (aka code). Problem solving is an extremely important skill, and coding is an excellent avenue to develop this skill. With Scratch, ANYONE can learn to create meaningful applications without meaning to! Drag blocks around to create an animated work of art, tell a story, or create a popular game such as Agario. All you need is a computer with an Internet link. This session will focus on how to get your students using this important tool that is taking over the planet and get you hooked up with resources to fill their minds. It will not require you to add a lot more prep work to your already full timetable and is fun!! You might even get hooked!

We will also introduce to you the BBC Micro:bit…a tiny pocket computer that anyone can code with the same block language as Scratch. Arif Kassum is originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, and completed his education at the University of Winnipeg, University of Saskatchewan and University of Manitoba where he received degrees in general biology, microbiology and immunology, and in education. Arif has experience teaching middle years and seniors years science in Cairo, Winnipeg, and Churchill, Manitoba.

Arif accepted his role as Frontier School Division Science Instructional position after spending two years as the head of science in Churchill, Manitoba. Arif has received Bravos and national media recognition on CBC’s The National, CBC Radio, and the Winnipeg Free Press for the drone program he has developed in Frontier School Division.

Matthew Johnson founded M3 Aerial Productions in 2015, initially as a media productions company. In November 2015 M3 Aerial redirected our focus to the precision agriculture sector. Today M3 Aerial is one of the leading agricultural UAV service providers in Canada. Matthew was educated at the University of Manitoba where he studied for eight years, obtaining three degrees (BPE, BA, Bed), and has taught mathematics in Manitoba high schools for five years. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves for 10 years and released in 2018 at the rank of Captain.

In 2018 Matthew was named as one of the Top 7 Drone Visionaries in Precision Agriculture and made the list of the Top 50 Drone Visionaries in a report by the Commercial UAV News.

Doug is a proud Metis and has a keen interest in promoting and working towards a workforce representative of our population. He is actively involved in a number of organizations including being a Director for the Louis Riel Institute. Doug has been an active member of the Interprovincial Association on Native Employment (IANE) – Westman Chapter for the past 16 years and is currently the Chair. Doug earned his Bachelor of General Studies from Brandon University in 1990. He places a high value on education and is committed to professional development. Through part‐time studies, he graduated again in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts.

Commitment to his community has always been a major focus. Doug has participated in a number of community activities and initiatives including sitting on the Brandon United Way board for 7 years. Doug was an active HRMAM member for many years co‐chairing the Westman Human Resource Management Association of Manitoba Annual Fun Golf Classic. He is a proponent of youth and coached soccer, baseball and ringette for a total of 15 years. In recognition of his volunteer activities, Doug was honoured with the BU Board of Governors’ Award For Excellence In Community Service awarded to “an individual who has made a positive impact on the quality of life in society through their community service”.

Doug is the Career Planning and Placement Officer at Brandon University. In this capacity he sees the importance education makes in peoples’ lives. He also teaches sessionally at Brandon University, he previously instructed an on‐line certificate program through the Faculty of Education and taught several evening courses at ACC. This session will focus on Traditional Games played by various ethnic groups. Over the past few years, I have developed and implemented a unit into my yearly physical education plan based on Traditional Games played by the various ethnic groups represented at my school. In developing this unit, I consulted with students, parents, resource teachers, EAL teachers, and our Aboriginal Education worker and compiled games from various cultural groups to teach in gym class. By including these games in my physical education classes, my hope is that more of our students will feel welcome in my classroom and school and feel as though their cultures and backgrounds are represented in our school landscape.

During this session, participants will be provided with background information regarding the nature of the games and how and why the game was traditionally played. Participants will also get the opportunity to learn more about these games and actively engage in playing a selection of games. Amie Martin is Cree with Metis roots, originally from Chemawawin First Nation now resides in Brandon, Manitoba.

Amie is among other Indigenous educators with a vision aimed at supporting Indigenous students, their families as well as classroom teachers, to foster the success of Indigenous learners.

Amie has two education degrees obtained at Brandon University including level 1 School Administrator Certificate and Level 2 Principals Certificate. Amie’s background work experience includes teaching early year to senior years, an education counsellor and principal at northern schools before settling on a job with the Brandon School Division as an Indigenous Education Learning Specialist. Her focus with the division on Curriculum, Program Planning, Classroom Guidance, and Direction. She works closely with all staff in support of Indigenous education and the inclusion for Indigenous perspectives in classrooms.

Amie serves in various committees in Brandon including Brandon Urban Aboriginals People Council and John Howard Society.

Naomi Leadbeater is completing her Masters in Music Education at Brandon University. Her thesis topic is Music educator’s exploration of incorporating Aboriginal and Indigenous perspectives in the classroom: A practitioner action-based research study. Dr. Shelia J. Scott and. Sheelagh Chadwick and Dr. Chris Beeman are her advisors, with anticipated graduation December 2019. She completed a Bachelor of music, with a specialization in Music Education from Brandon University in 2003. In addition to working on her Masters, Naomi is employed with Mini University.

Naomi’s experience includes 15 years as a private piano and voice instructor along with editorial and writing experience in Music Education Journal and with various independent authors. She has held a Graduate Assistantship and filled in as a Substitute Lecturer when professors were absent in Early Years’ Music Education for Exceptional Learners and Ethnomusicology and the Canadian Musician at Brandon University.

Naomi runs the gamut from Restaurant and Project Management to Community Development Coordinator. Prior to returning to school, Naomi has served on numerous community boards and committees including The Marquis Project (President), Walking with our Sisters, Brandon Community Gardens, and many others since moving to Brandon to pursue a Bachelor of Music in 1999.

Originally, from a farm near the Pembina River, Naomi hopes to complete her PhD on the prairies, exploring themes and intersections of decolonization from a settler perspective in music education.

This session will focus on the residential school legacy and Calls to Action in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission reports (2015). In an interactive session, teachers will map out their own paths of education, followed by mapping out the 100 years of loss timeline as a group activity using Ozobot Evo’s. As a cross curricular activity, presenters will highlight math, social studies, and computer science curriculum outcomes that can be delivered by using Ozobots in the classroom.

Ozobot Evo’s are perfect for early years students and are one form of digital technology that does not need an active internet connection to be used in the classroom. In addition to line-based coding, the ozobots can extend to include block coding and java script grade level through the use of Blocky editing programs.

After seven years teaching in an elementary school, Richard became vice principal, first at the elementary level and then for the next twenty-seven years he served as vice-principal at the high school level. This session will focus on understanding theory and learning interventions for blending career and personal counselling with practical ways to apply social justice values to school guidance counselling practices. Melissa Mitchell is a high school graduate of the division scolaire franco-manitobaine and an education graduate of Brandon University. Before taking her education degree, she spent a year in France to brush up on her language skills. Melissa has taught in the Brandon School Division, the dsfm and is currently the French coordinator for the Park West School Division, helping French teachers with their classroom needs. Her teaching assignments, which have covered K-12, have either been teaching in French or teaching French. Melissa noticed that teaching French was more of a challenge than teaching in the language itself and as a result, began to analyze it thoroughly in order to create a balanced language program that focuses on routine and confidence. By incorporating some elements from Wendy Maxwell’s AIM program, Melissa has taught hundreds of students to feel more confident in their language skills.

Dr. Burcu Yaman Ntelioglou is a professor in the Faculty of Education, Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy at Brandon University, Canada. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship and a PhD at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. She teaches in both the teacher education and graduate education programs. Her work focuses on the education of linguistically and culturally diverse students in contexts of migration, multiculturalism and multilingualism; second language acquisition/education; literacy education; curriculum studies; language maintenance and revitalization; drama education; and the use of collaborative, community-based, participatory, and multimodal methodologies in research.

Cultural and linguistic diversity has increased considerably around the world. These changing demographics challenge schools and Faculties of Education to take proactive educational approaches to support these linguistically and culturally diverse students in K-12 classrooms.
In this presentation, the participants are introduced to multiple classroom practices to support bi/plurilingual EAL students from immigrant and refugee backgrounds. These examples of classroom practices are developed as a result of collaboration between classroom teachers, EAL specialists in one school division in Manitoba and university-based researchers as part of a research study titled ‘Supporting English as Additional Language Learners’.

In this presentation, in addition to the sharing of descriptions classroom practices and resources, voices from students, teachers, teacher candidates and parents are shared to portray the experiences and discuss instructional practices that support bi/plurilingual EAL students from immigrant and refugee backgrounds in K-12 classrooms.

Michael Macaraeg, Teacher/Debate Coach

Jordan Burg is a retired English and History teacher, spending his last 24 years as the debate coach at St. Mary’s Academy, and at St. Paul’s High School for two years prior to that. He is currently on the Board of the CSDF-FCDÉ, representing central Canada, and promoting debate across the country. The Board also governs the Canadian National team, which competes at Worlds events annually. He is also the Facilitator for Outreach & Development for the MSDA, helping schools in Winnipeg, Brandon, Morden, and other rural communities in Manitoba to establish debate programs in in Senior and Middle schools. Jordan was one of the co-organizers of the CSDF-FCDÉ National Debating Seminar, which was hosted in Morden in September. The Seminar encourages new and novice Manitoba student debaters to learn and develop their debating skills, all the while connecting with other student delegations from every province and territory in Canada, all the while enjoying a meaningful educational and enriching cultural experience and offered in both official languages. In 2017, Jordan was recognized with the Willis S. McLeese Award for his efforts in promoting debate locally, regionally, and nationally.

Michael Macaraeg is the debate coach at Morden Collegiate Institute and on the Board of Directors for the CSDF-FCDÉ. Michael started the debate program at Morden Collegiate only 4 years ago, but in that short time frame, the debate club has had a remarkable increase from four to twenty-plus students, and just this year, started one of the first French/Bilingual high school debate programs in Manitoba. With a focus on having students learn about speech and debate styles, he also promotes self-advocacy and competent communication. Last fall, Michael had one of his students attend the National Student Debate Seminar in Québec City, where she won two major awards: the Founder’s Cup Award for the top debater from Manitoba and the Chief Justice Award for the Top Bilingual Debater from all of the seminar participants. Michael was a co-organizer the 2019 National Student Debate Seminar in Morden, which saw over 100 participants from all across Canada come to Manitoba to engage in learning about debate through workshops, a model parliament at the Manitoba Legislative Building, and a debate tournament.

Debating in the Classroom and as an Extra-Curricular: This session will go into detail to explain how the art of student debate works, complete with demonstrations, and will explain how to use it as a teaching tool to enhance the curriculum and build up self-esteem and confidence in public speaking and critical thinking for students. Vanda Mitri is a Reading Recovery Teacher Leader for Southwest Manitoba supporting students, teachers, and school divisions with Early Literacy.

Literacy Processing theory and Balanced Literacy originated with the New Zealand Ministry of Education. This includes a classroom focus on oral language, writing and reading but also encompasses inquiry driven pedagogy from classroom through to administration; formative assessment weaving through everything; leadership embedded and supported at all levels of the organization; professional conversations in every staffroom; effortless differentiation; and an Aboriginal world view, with culture and language intertwined through it all. What have we missed just reading the books about Balanced Literacy? This session provides an insight into how it all works in New Zealand after Vanda’s summer spent in New Zealand’s early years classrooms.

As a drama educator for more than 20 years, Nancy Pitcairn is excited to share her passion for theatre with fellow educators. Nancy has directed more than 30 plays and musicals at Vincent Massey High School and was involved in writing the Manitoba Grades 9 to 12 Drama Curriculum.

Bonnie Neil started her teaching career in 2005 at École Selkirk Junior High in Selkirk, Manitoba, where she taught grades 7-9 for ten years. During that time, she was the department head for ELA and SS and a member of the divisional UDL and Literacy committees. Bonnie received her PBDE in 2015 for a focus on Guidance Counselling, and she changed roles to an elementary school guidance counsellor.

Arlene Macduff has 29 years of teaching experience that spans early and middle years, and she presently teaches grades one and two at Stony Mountain School. Arlene has a special interest in creative development, universal design, and inquiry learning. She has two PBDE’s, a Special Education Certificate, and is currently working on her MEd in Educational Administration.

Participants will reflect on their experiences and current practice, dialogue with colleagues, and discover how to deepen connections with students to improve student learning.

The focus of the workshop is to provide the participants with a classroom routine that will build confidence in their learners, methods to enrich language skills and an easy and accurate assessment practice that reflects the curriculum and your grade book. Jocelyn Bender, Pam Bowles and Patti Hack are K-12 educators from Swan Valley School Division.

In this presentation we share findings from a year-long, funded research study that focused on how K-12 educators contextualized and practiced the teaching of language arts and literacy in the midst of a shift to a new English Language Arts curriculum.

In addition to sharing data from the teacher online survey and interviews, for this presentation, we share examples of classroom practices that reflect the four practices of language as sense making, language as exploration and design, language as system and language as power and agency outlined in the new ELA curriculum document. Classroom practices that aim to support students’ languages, literacies and identities through collaborative and community-based literacy practices are shared with the participants.
