Bill 2: The Public Schools Amendment Act – Small Class Sizes K-3
The Public Schools Act is amended to require that 90% of the kindergarten and Grades 1 to 3 classes within a school division or school district have 20 or fewer pupils. Classes with K to 3 pupils are not permitted to exceed 23 pupils.
These requirements are effective as of July 1, 2017.
On request of a school board, the minister may permit a class size limit to be exceeded in a school year if construction of additional classroom space is under way or has been approved.
The minister may also make regulations concerning a school board’s reporting of class size information to the minister and the public.
