Program

9-9:15 am
Special presentation of Dr. Linda Siegel MTSLD teacher scholarship with president and vice president.

Session A – 9:15am – 9:45am Central standard time

Keynote with Dr. Anna Stokke – “Why are Numeracy Skills Essential for All?”

It is important for students to receive effective math instruction and, due to the cumulative nature of math, it can be difficult for students to get caught up when they fall behind early on. I will discuss evidence-based practices for teaching children who struggle with math. The techniques discussed in this presentation apply to any grade level, but will be particularly applicable to Grades 1-8.

Dr. Stokke will be delivering a session following her keynote.

Bio – Dr. Anna Stokke is a math professor at the University of Winnipeg, a 3M National Teaching Fellow and host of the education podcast Chalk & Talk.

10-noon
Dr. Valdine Bjornson

*This is a pre-recorded 1 hour session

Teaching Vocabulary – We are all literacy teachers! How can we support all learners in Literacy classrooms, content area and beyond to utilize vocabulary instruction to support comprehension and literacy skill development? Specifically for those with LD, educators must strategize how to navigate target vocabulary to support content material as well as reading-spelling skills towards learning across content areas.

Bio – Dr. Bjornson currently works as Literacy Specialist teacher in a public K-8 school. She works as a reading and learning coach at the University of Manitoba. She provides accredited OGA courses across Canada. She completed a Doctor of Education focusing on adults with dyslexia in Manitoba. Grammar and Vocabulary.

Session A – 10am – 12 noon Central standard time
Kristen McDowell
This session will provide an overview of structured literacy including resources and assessments. The focus will be on the importance of implementing SOR practices in the classroom in order to identify kids at risk early on and provide appropriate instruction. The session will also provide information on dyslexia in the hopes of building more understanding and empathy.

Bio – I am currently working as a classroom support teacher in both English and immersion schools with a focus on literacy instruction in the early years.

Session B – 1pm-3pm
Liisa Freure
This session will introduce how to use multisensory materials to teach basic grammar concepts and sentence structure to students. This is particularly helpful for students who struggle to remember terminology or don’t have an intuitive sense of what makes a complete sentence. The focus will be on foundational grammar concepts with students who have a very basic knowledge of phoneme-grapheme correspondences but the ideas can be expanded and applied to students at any level.

Bio – Certified teacher, Accredited Training Fellow – OGA, parent of grown children with dyslexia and ADHD with 30 years of experience in the field of education.

1-3pm
Dr. Maria Phelps
Early diagnosis of dyslexia is associated with an improved developmental trajectory compared to a wait and see approach. Late diagnosis or no diagnosis is associated with low self esteem, higher rates of school drop out, and anxiety. With the right supports, however, these students can learn, have increased self esteem, enhanced self confidence, and stay in school. Evidenced-based early, middle, and Senior Years classroom strategies will be presented that enhance positive motivation (self belief) and positive engagement (persistence).

Bio – For over 15 years, I have been a school psychologist with the division and supporting students with dyslexia has been my passion.
