Welcome and Conversation 1: A Heart-Centered Approach to Teaching, Learning & Living

A conversation exploring and grounding us in the concept of ‘Heart-Centeredness’ and how it applies to teaching, learning and living. The connection Regie Routman shares with Manitoba Educators through Allyson Matczuk and the “Transforming our Teaching Through Reading/Writing Connections” professional development project will also be highlighted and celebrated.

Conversation 2: A Heart-Centered Approach to Teaching Readers, Writers and Thinkers

In this conversation, Regie Routman and MELIT president Helen Proulx will be digging into the practical ways the Heart-Centered approach can be used in literacy teaching and learning. Resources and practical tips to enhance teaching practice will be shared. Questions generated during the MELIT spring bookclub will guide the conversation.

With videos, photos, and conversations with teachers and students, we will see the Read-Write connection in action. What does it look like and sound like when students’ hearts and minds are fully engaged and learning? We will observe Centennial school in Selkirk MB at work.

AM02 - Indigenous Literacy Responsiveness

Indigenous Literacy Responsiveness: This session will address aspects of literacy through a lens of indigeneity with understandings pertaining to context, nonverbal cues, silences/pauses, along with subconscious knowledge. This workshop session is reflected within Indigenous sources of information (msv) to support the path to literacy learning.

AM03 - Awakening the Heart and Mind Through Poetry

Why poetry, you might ask? This session will explore how to create a community that reads and writes with joy and ease in this heart centred genre. Come learn how poetry serves as an entrance to all reading and writing.

AM04 - Teacher Expertise in Selecting Texts for Early Readers

Selecting texts for early readers has become a hot topic. Teachers need to be expert choosers of their instructional texts with knowledge of various book types, including leveled, decodable, and patterned. We will explore what the research actually tells us, as we dive into how to select the best texts for scaffolding our students’ needs in early reading. Topics include types of early books, selection criteria from research, and honoring teachers as professional decision-makers.

PM01 - Carrying on the Heart-Centered Work at Elwick School

Educators from Seven Oaks School Division will focus on their experiences with the Regie Routman Residency (September 2021-June 2024) and how this opportunity has impacted their practice and will showcase how this work and learning has been on-going and continued after the residency. Videos of authentic and meaningful teaching in Grade 1/2 and Grade 5/6 classrooms will be demonstrated and children’s writing samples will be shared.

PM04 - Mamàhtawisiwin: The Wonder We Are Born With

The Indigenous education policy framework supports educators by helping them to deepen their understanding and progress along a path of Truth and Reconciliation. It aims to empower teachers to embed strategies and practices into their educational settings and classroom routines to reflect Indigenous languages, cultures, and identities. The goal is to enhance the achievement and well-being of Indigenous students, setting them up for success. Suitable for All.
