31B - Forced to Flee - Refugee Simulation

How many times have we been told to "walk a mile in someone else's shoes" as a way to explain the concept of empathy? Recently, the Brandon School Division has welcomed several refugee students and their families into our community and our classrooms. As professionals, it is our job to best understand the students we work with on a daily basis, and that includes being informed about the events that have shaped their lives in major ways.

In this activity, participants work together in ‘family units’, making difficult decisions to maintain their supply of food, money, and health while securing their future post-conflict. Each decision has consequences for the family, some of which may be dire. At the end of the simulation, we will debrief the activity and discuss the impact it has had on the BSD staff and students who have already participated.

We hope you will be left with some perspective about what some of our students may have experienced, and that it leaves a lasting impact that follows you into your classrooms.

This session is open to any and all interested staff, but if you are thinking about using the simulation in your classroom, it is recommended for grades 7-12.
