Part 1: What is so magical about economics? – Basic economics in Harry Potter Welcome to the wonderous world of Harry Potter! In this first module you will be introduced to the magic of Harry Potter and explore economic concepts such as scarcity, incentives and more, through videos, quizzes, and an interactive lecture.

Part 2: Harry Potter and the Muggle Rebellion: Why is there so much discrimination in the magical world? In this second module you will explore economic impacts of discrimination and monopolies within the Harry Potter Universe. From discrimination against mudbloods to the wand monopoly of Ollivanders, dive deeper into the magic and economics of Harry Potter.

2B-Manitoba High School Business Competitions 2024-2025 (RRCP, MHSCC, Stu Clark)

Justin is an instructor for Teacher Education and Teaching for Learning at Red River College Polytechnic. Justin has designed and hosted the first two high school commerce competitions at his college to provide rich and experiential learning experiences for his students and high school students. Justin provides a competitive but fun environment for all participants. In 2024, the event hosted 220 students and had several sponsorships from the business and education communities both locally and nationally. He hopes to improve and grow the experience for 2025. In this session, Justin will present on the RRC Polytechnic High School Commerce Competition that will be held on April 16, 2025.

Alexia Walters is a faculty member with the Peters School of Business at Assiniboine College in Brandon, Manitoba. Alexia is part of a faculty group who administers the Manitoba High School Case Competition (MHSCC). High school case competitions are dynamic and intellectually stimulating events that provide students with a platform to apply their academic knowledge to real-world business challenges. These competitions involve teams of high school students analyzing a business case involving a complex problem faced by individuals and organizations. Participants are tasked with dissecting the case, identifying key issues, and proposing strategic solutions within a limited timeframe. The MHSCC originated in 2017 and teams compete in two categories, personal finance and entrepreneurship. In a typical year, the competition consists of 12 teams of three participating in each category, approximately 72 high school students in total. The competition is typically held in May each year.

Amy is the Event Manager at the Stu Clark Centre for Entrepreneurship located at the University of Manitoba and organizes the Stu Clark High School Pitch Workshop which will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. Students embark on a fast-paced day of listening, learning, and doing! The SCCE’s goal is to encourage students to discover their entrepreneurial skills and provide an opportunity to learn strategies on how to think creatively and channel their inner entrepreneur into real-life activities. The day will end with a pitch competition to practice public speaking. In 2024, the event had over 60 students attend. This event is FREE and students are provided with breakfast, a pizza lunch, and a free t-shirt.


2C-Financial Planner: Investment Session

With over 17 years of experience in the financial services industry, Neil is actively engaged in helping his clients achieve their personal financial goals by getting a deep understanding of their values and fostering strong relationships. No matter the goal, Neil takes a disciplined approach to understanding and creating tailored plans so that his clients can have confidence in their financial decisions. In this session, Neil will present information regarding where the market was, is and where he thinks the market is going. While analyzing financial information is imperative in his role, Neil likes to take the approach of the individual's comfort level as it relates to risk tolerance and current financial situation. This session is ideal for anyone wanting financial information as they lean towards their current situation and for retirement.

3B-Indigenous Education-Entrepreneurship & Financial Literacy Resources for Teachers

Gord Desjarlais is Lead Entrepreneurship Coach with the Martin Family Initiative and has been teaching the MFI Indigenous Youth Entrepreneurship Program (IYEP) to Grade 11 and 12 students at E.D. Feehan High School in the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools for the last 6 years. For the last 16 years, MFI has worked with over 90 schools across 8 provinces and 2 territories and supported over 5000 students accessing Indigenous-specific entrepreneurship and financial literacy resources, based on the experiences of Indigenous entrepreneurs and business leaders. Gord will present on the IYEP and MFI’s curriculum and partnership opportunities, and the impact of the program so far.

4B-Unleash the Dragons: Transforming Business Education with Project Based Learning

Kelsey Hildebrand (B.Sc, B.Ed) is a Business and Mathematics teacher at St. John’s Ravenscourt School. She is passionate about creating authentic learning experiences that incorporate project based learning, inquiry and creativity. Kelsey is currently working on her PBDE at the University of Manitoba. In this session, we will be exploring how you can teach entrepreneurship, innovation and marketing, through a multi step “dragon’s den” style project that is centered on critical thinking, creativity and inquiry. 5A-Junior Achievement

JA is a worldwide organization that offers relevant, hands-on learning through programs on work readiness, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship. Joy will give an overview of the programs available to educators across Manitoba to enhance curriculum needs and provide students with exposure to positive role-models and real-life stories from the business community, as well as the opportunity to participate in hands-on and digital learning activities. 5B-TRAF Teachers’ Retirement Fund Pension Planning

The goal of the presentation is to acquaint you with basic information about your TRAF pension plan that will help you make informed retirement decisions throughout your career. This session is designed to increase your awareness of TRAF, provide a basic understanding of how the plan works for you and educate on resources available to find out more about the pension plan.
